The following is a tribute written by Jeanne Morrissey.
I met Karen Lewis in 1997 when we were paired together at my first State Amateur in St Johnsbury. From there, Karen taught me, encouraged me and supported me in the game of golf for the decades to follow. Karen invited me to my first Sarah Hunter in 1998 where we played together for many years. She would always stop on the stair in front of the picture of Sarah and ask for her blessing of our tournament performance. She invited me to play with her and her friends in many events over the years.
I remember well when Karen, Cindy Paquet, Sandy Foster and I stunned a large field of men after winning a benefit tournament at Montague, Karen was not very happy that our trophies had men on them!!!! Even after Karen couldn’t play much for health reasons, she would come to the state wide events and the Sarah Hunter to watch everyone come in or take the turn. And for me, she was always sporting the JAM visor I had given her long ago. She was unceasingly positive about everything I did and she contributed her hearty laugh to all of her commentary. Karen shared with me everything she could to make me a better golfer and she kept a watchful eye on tournament results, often sending a congratulatory email for any accomplishment at all.
I will be forever grateful for her kindness and support and belief in me. After I shot a second 69 in Newport state day, she had the VSWGA embroider a JAM hat marking the course and the year commemorating the experience for me. In memory of her, I will be wearing it at this year’s State Amateur as I ask Karen for her blessing of me and all who play.
