I was born and raised in Florida, but New England has been my home since 1979.

After enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in Korea and at bases in Virginia and Massachusetts, I went to college on the GI Bill and obtained a degree in Nursing from the University of New Hampshire. For 31 years, I was at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, working in the Pediatric Department and Intensive Care Nursery, and then serving adults in the Same Day Surgery and Outpatient departments.

During my high school years, I participated in competitive swimming, volleyball, track and softball. But not golf! My brothers played, and eventually my father, who quickly decided that golf would become a new fun family activity. I didn’t get to vote on that idea and, mind you, I still didn’t understand the appeal of the game, but I dutifully joined them when I travelled to Florida. You couldn’t call anything I was doing “golf”, but at least I could laugh at myself, and frequently still do.

I worked with Kathy Allbright at DHMC, and one year, I joined her and two other staff members in a charity tournament. It was a scramble format, and she had to clean up after many poor shots. We came in last, but had a good time. With Kathy’s encouragement, I began taking golf seriously.  Since my bad knees had curtailed my love of summer hiking, golf became my new outlet for outdoor fun.

I found a home at Crown Point CC, playing with some amazing ladies who patiently guided and encouraged me. Within a year, I joined the VSWGA and started playing State Days, progressing to the Majors and Tri-State events, and then serving on the VSWGA Board of Directors.

Now some 19 years later, and serving another “tour” on the VSWGA Board, I look back and marvel at the many friendships I’ve made through golf and relish the opportunities ahead.
