The Rules of the United States Golf Association  govern play in all VSWGA events including State Days and major tournaments. The volume of rules may seem overwhelming but have evolved over generations and are grounded in the integrity of all golfers.

Don’t be intimidated! There are numerous resources available to help you learn the rules of golf. In addition to the links below, you can often get clarification from fellow VSWGA members, your club’s golf professional, or various other resources created to further explain the rules of golf.

We encourage all members to download the USGA Rules of Golf App. Not only does this provide instant access to the rules during the course of play, it enables access to the free Rules 101 course either on the app or a computer.

The VSWGA also supports educational opportunities to assist our members in learning the USGA Rules of Golf, including contributing toward the cost of attending USGA workshops for those interested in becoming rules officials for VSWGA and VGA events.

Other Resources:

  • Visit the USGA’s Rules of Golf Home for the most current version of the rules of golf. This page provides not only access to the rules but a free Rules 101 online course!
  • Though primarily useful to individual users on a computer, the USGA also offers a poster-size reference (intended for posting at golf courses) of 15 Rules Every Golfer Should Know.
  • Still stumped by a rules issue? Reach out to anyone on the VSWGA Rules Committee (listed in your VSWGA Handbook) or email the USGA. They really do respond.
