The Vermont Women’s Major Season is winding down with the Mid-Amateur Championship at Haystack Golf Club. At the start of the day, the course was a bit dry given our drought across Vermont this year, but the weather shifted, and half the field ended up getting pulled off the course to let a torrential rainstorm move through. By the end of the day, everyone finished their round safely and spirits continue to be high. Our field of 77 women are ready for Day 2.
The competition is tight after Round 1 play. Carson Richards from Burlington Country Club is leading the field, shooting a 4-over 78. Wendy Drolette (Williston Golf Club), Cheri Campbell (Kwiniaska Golf Club), and Holly Reynolds (Copley Country Club) are in hot pursuit, all shooting a 79. There are three players with a Round 1 score of 80, and our defending champ, Lin Culver, shot an 83 along with 3 other golfers.
There are 10 players within 5 strokes of the lead. Day 2 is sure to be an exciting fight for the Championship Trophy.
The Margaret Dick Cup is an additional tournament within the Mid-Am; it is awarded to the golf club with the best 2 gross scores and best 1 net score. Williston Golf Club is in the lead with a total team score of 231. Kwinisaka Golf Club and Burlington Country Club are a few points behind, each with a score of 243.
