Vermont’s 8-year Tri-State winning streak ended at the hands of a strong team from host state New Hampshire. After the first day of competition, which featured an alternate shot format, the Granite Staters took a 15-point lead over Vermont, then out-scored the Green Mountain team by 35 points on the second day of competition, finishing with 166 points to Vermont’s 116. Vermont had a 3-point lead over Maine after day one but was unable to hold off a charge in the individual matches on day two, finishing in third place, seven points behind Maine’s 123.
The top Vermont point-winners held their own in the hard-fought competition, including good showings by three new players. [For the purpose of totaling individual points, the points won during the alternate shot play were given to each of the twosomes.]
Alternates from the three states held a stroke play tournament concurrent with the matches. Vermont’s Kathy Kemp from Country Club of Barre shot a 2-day total 181 for the low gross win. Peg Crowley of New Hampshire won low net.
Tri-States has been held annually since the early 1950s. Each team fields 30 players and two alternates. Next year’s event will be held in Maine.
