Holly Reynolds Wins 9th State Amateur Championship

Holly Reynolds of Copley Country Club won her 9th State Amateur Championship over a 28 year span beginning in 1989.  After firing a one-over par 72 in round 1 and an 80 in round 2, Holly took an 8-stroke lead into the final round.  As it turned out, she would need most of those 8 strokes for her victory.

Jeanne Morrissey of Williston fired the low round of the day with a 76 which pulled her into second place at 238, just two strokes behind Holly.  After a birdie on the par 3 16th, Jeanne was within one stroke of Holly. Both Andrea Brown of Alburg and Tiffany Maurycy of Killington made runs at Holly during the course of the round.  Andrea played steady golf all day with a 40 on the front and a 39 on the back.  She pulled within two strokes of Holly at one point on the back nine.  Tiffany fired a 36 on the front nine with birdies on 3 and 6. After a birdie on 10, she actually stood one-up on Holly, but was derailed by hitting her drive into the woods on the 15th. Andrea finished third at 239 and Tiffany was fourth at 241.

Holly hit the wrong ball on the 9th hole incurring a two stroke penalty.  She followed that with a triple bogey 8 on the 10th hole struggling with the fescue.  She was able to right the ship with solid putts on 11, 12, and 13 ending with an 84 for a three day total of 236 and a two-stroke victory.  The Country Club of Barre was also the site of Holly’s third State Am title in 1991.

Nancy Devaux of West Bolton finished in 5th place with a 244.  Julia Dapron of Dorset Field Club, Kristin Mahoney of Rutland and Katie Goulet were all tied at 250.  The match of cards put Julia in 6th, Kristin in 7th, and Katie in 8th.  Rounding out the top ten were Miranda Milne of the Country Club of Vermont with a 251 and Mary Brush of Burlington with a 252.

Julia Dapron won the Junior title over last year’s Junior winner Katie Goulet in a three-hole sudden death playoff with a birdie.

Lucille Rogoff of Green Mountain National was the low net winner.  Holly won the Allbright Ringer trophy with a ringer score of 67.  Williston won the Paquet Cup for the team competition with a 752.  Burlington was second at 787.

Next year’s Championship will be held at the Country Club of Vermont.
