Madison Corley Wins State Am

Tuesday morning’s steady rain produced some slightly higher scores with Andrea Brown’s round of 77 being the lowest score. Madison Corley was one stroke back at 78. Those were the only rounds in the seventies on opening day.  The weather cleared off Tuesday afternoon and was perfect for the rest of the tournament. Madison took advantage of the improved weather and fired a one-over-par round of 73 on Wednesday to surge into the lead by seven strokes over seven-time champion Holly Reynolds. Holly added a round of 77 to her opening round of 81.  Tiffany Maurycy also added a round of 77 to her opening round of 82 while Andrea Brown added an 82 to her opening 77 to be tied for third after two days of play.

Madison Corley of Stowe  fired another 73 in the final round today to win her third consecutive state amateur championship by a decisive fourteen stroke margin.  This is Madison’s third consecutive state amateur championship with a victory in 2013 at Manchester Country Club and a victory last year at Orleans Country Club.

Tiffany Maurycy of Williston was the runner-up at 238 with rounds of 82, 77, and 79.  This is Tiffany’s second runner-up finish after losing to Molly Aronsson in a playoff at Ralph Myhre in 2006.   Andrea Brown of Champlain was third at 239 with rounds of 77, 82, and 80.  Holly Reynolds and Jeanne Morrissey of Williston were tied for fourth at  241.

Terry Boyce of Killington was sixth at 242.  Tracy Sloan of Brattleboro was seventh at 256.  Gretchen White of Williston was eighth at 257.  Katie Goulet of Newport was ninth at 260.  Erika Politano of Green Mountain was tenth.

The Low Net award went to junior play Carley Giroux of Newport with a net score of 210.  Lois Forester of the host Brattleboro course was second at 219.  Nancy Gorham-Lasante of Bellows Falls was third at 222 followed by Sherryl Libardoni of Brattleboro at 223.  Trish Wade of Green Mountain National was fifth net at 224.  Maureen Quinn of Lake St. Catherine and Laurie Carver of Crown Point were tied for sixth net at 225.  Christina Graves of Okemo Valley was eighth at 226. Cathy Neff finished in ninth net at 228 followed by Kathy Allbright of Green Mountain National at 230.

Both junior players, Katie Goulet and Carley Giroux, did very well in the tournament.  Katie finished in ninth place and was the Junior Champion.  Carley Giroux was the Low Net winner.  Both Katie and Carley are from Newport Country Club.

Former champion Cindy Paquet of Essex had a hole-in-one on the sixteenth hole during Wednesday’s round.

The team from Williston won the Paquet Cup with  a score of 733.  The host Brattleboro team was second at 797.  The team from Williston also recently won the Pat Job Cup at the Seniors’ and also holds the Margaret Dick Cup from last fall’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

After having to move the Seniors’ Championship from Brattleboro to Manchester due to damage to the greens over the winter, Brattleboro was happy to be able to host this year’s State Amateur Championship.  The course was in excellent shape this year and drained remarkably well after Tuesday morning’s heavy rain.  Many thanks to the people of Brattleboro for hosting a great event.  The Mid-Amateur Championship will be there next year.
