The 2013 Ruth Raymond Jones Seniors' Championship was held at Orleans Country Club on July 17 and 18 in the midst of a sweltering heat wave.  Mari Harter of the host Orleans club remained cool, calm, and collected posting two steady rounds of 81 to win the championship by three strokes over Sue Bagley of St. Johnsbury.  Sue fired a 79 on Thursday, the low round o the day,  to pull herself into the runner-up spot.  Rhonda Colvard, who eagled the ninth hole on Wednesday to take the first round lead, struggled a bit on Thursday, but still finished in third place with a total of 168.  Deidre Mahler of the Country Club of Vermont scored two consistent rounds of 85 to finish in fourth place. Elizabeth Walker of Brattleboro finished in fifth place with a 171 total.  Sheila Darrah of Copley, who is returning to competition after several years of not playing, finished in sixth place with a 172 total.  Trish Wade of Green Mountain, Diane Ewald of Rutland, and Ethelyn Bartlett of Cedar Knoll all tied for seventh with 173 totals.  Ethelyn Bartlett, who won the Seniors' Championship in 1997 and 2001, also won the Legend Trophy. Cynthia Borck of Stowe and Mary Jane Shomo of Rutland rounded out the top ten with scores of 174.  Josie Herrera of Vermont National won the Super Senior Trophy also with a score of 174.

Josie was the low net winner with a fine net score of 130, one stroke better than Karen Bennett of Orleans.  Corinne Maietta of Burlington was third net at 133 followed by Diane Macey of Stratton Mountain at 134.  Lois Forester of Brattleboro and Carolyn Marshall of West Bolton tied for 5th net with scores of 136.  Sylvia Pope of Stowe, Alicia Field of Brattleboro, and Donna Mazut of Vermont National were tied for 7th net at 138.  Nicole Laberge of Ralph Myhre and Barb Cormier of the Country Club of Barre were tied for 10th net at 139.Mari Harter won Wednesday's putting contest with 27 putts.  The host Orleans team won the Pat Job Cup with a total of 433, ten shots better than the runner-up Brattleboro team.

Many thanks to Orleans Pro Josh Olney, tournament co-chairs Irene Farrar and Jane Horton, and all the Orleans ladies who helped organize the tournament.  Orleans is always a wonderful host for VSWGA events over the years.  Orleans will host the State Amateur Championship next year.  The Orleans was in outstanding condition, especially with the difficult weather conditions this summer.  A vicious thunderstorm went through Orleans during the banquet creating a river down the 18th hole and a pond on the green. By Thursday morning, the water had drained and the course was back to near perfect shape.

Thanks to Irene Farrar and Bonita Wells for the photos.
