Vermont Wins Tri-States

Vermont won the 2008 Tri-State Tournament by a slim margin of 7 points over New Hampshire.  Over the two days of play, Vermont scored a total of 145 points to New Hampshire's 138 points and Maine's 122.5 points.  This is the second consecutive year that Vermont has edged out the New Hampshire team for the trophy.  Vermont won last year in Rockland, Me by only 9 points.

This year's competition was hosted by Vermont at the beautiful Jay Peak Golf Course in Jay, Vt.   The course sits at the base of the ski trails and the views throughout the course are spectacular.  The biggest challenge is to figure out how the mountain will affect the putting on each hole.

The tournament consists of two days of match play among Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont with each state sending a 30-member team.  The first day of play is an alternate shot format.  The team of Phyllis Simon of Vermont National and Pam Shover of Williston took all six available points.  Catherine Shomo of Proctor-Pittsford and Cindy Paquet of Essex teamed for 5.5 points, followed by the teams of Edith Hiller of Rutland & Mickey Potwin of Lake Morey and Harriet Parot of Okemo & Roberta Lynch of Green Mountain National with 5 points each.

The second day of play is in the traditional individual match play format.  Edith Hiller of Rutland, Eileen Ranslow of Brattleboro, and Roberta Lynch of Green Mountain each won the maximum of six points.  Proctor-Pittsford's long-hitting young star, Catherine Shomo, won 5.5 points playing in the anchor position and solidifying Vermont's win.  Carol Miner of Manchester and Mickey Potwin of Lake Morey also had 5.5 points each.  Kristen Mahoney of Rutland and Sue Ginnett of Newport each contributed 4.5 points.

The two alternates from each state played a separate tournament.  Paula Ainsworth of New Hampshire was the low gross winner with a total of 178.  Suzanne Neville of Vermont was the low net winner with a net total of 165.
