Sally Guerette Retires From UVM

Sally Guerette will end 31 years of involvement with University of Vermont athletics when she takes early retirement effective Aug. 31.

Guerette, 59, came to UVM as a physical education instructor and tennis coach in 1969 and later became head softball coach. She has served as an assistant athletic director since 1977 and is the department's NCAA compliance officer and its Senior Woman Administrator.

She has been an instrumental part of Vermont's Kids and Kops program that links local children witn UVM student-athletes. Guerette also played a key role in bringing the America East women's basketball tournament to Burlington.

"The most important thing I can say about Sally is this: She cares," said athletic director Rick Farmham. "She cares about people and about UVM. That will also be her legacy here."

Guerette was a standout athlete at Nashua (NH) High School and Plymouth State College. She played four sports: field hockey, basketball, tennis and softball.

Guerette earned her master's degree at Cortland State in 1969, after which she came to Vermont. She has been inducted into the athletic halls of fame at Nashua High, Plymouth State and Cortland.

Guerette, who will remain a consultant to the athletic department, plans to pursue opportunities in teaching and administration.

"I have mixed emotions - it has been a wonderful job," she said. "I've been through a lot of changes in 31 years and am ready to move on to something new."

Sally has been the president of the Vermont State Women's Golf Association since 1998.
